LESSON CONTENT
WASTE AND WASTE DISPOSAL
Waste is any materials unused and rejected as worthless or unwanted from domestic, commercial and agricultural activities. Disposal of waste should always be done the right way for our health benefit.
Categories of Waste
Waste can be categories into three (3).
- Liquid
- Solid
- Gaseous
Types of wastes
Waste is of two types. These are
- Refuse
- sewage
REFUSE
Refuse are unwanted solid materials found in our environment. They are thrown away because they are of no use to the person, offices, institutions that threw them away.
Examples of refuse: empty cans, broken bottles, pieces of wood, plastic containers, papers, food containers, polythene bags, old clothes (rags), food items. Sachet water, biscuit, peels of fruits. Sometimes this refuses are been decomposed by moulds and bacteria but some cannot be decomposed.
Any refuse that can be decomposed are called BIODEGRADABLE REFUSE while refuse that cannot be decomposed are called NON – BIODEGRADABLE REFUSE.
Examples of Biodegradable refuse are: food, fish, etc.
Examples of Non – Biodegradable refuse are: Polythene, cans, plastics.
SEWAGE
Sewage are liquid or semi –liquid wastes. Sewage waste matters from human and animal faeces, urine, release from factories and houses like waste water, mineral salt.Sewage wastes are very poisonous, it contains germs like worms, bacteria, protozoa, viruses. So, sewage should not be allowed to mix with tap water, wells, rivers and our food.
Sewage can be turned to fertilizer or manure if treated and well managed.Sewage Farm (Sewage treatment plant) is a place where sewage is treated.
WASTE DISPOSAL
Waste disposal is the way of keeping our waste (sewage and refuse) in a proper place so that it will not affect our environment. Wastes can be disposed by using disposal bin, disposal van, Disposal barrel, disposal pit.
Ways of disposing sewage waste
- Water closet or discharge pipe should be linked to a soak away.
- Pit latrine should be linked to a septic tank.
Ways of disposing Refuse waste
- Use of dump bin to dumped refuse.
- The use of incinerator.
- Compositing method.
- Land filling.
Recycling of waste
Recycling is the procedure of making a materials that has been used before to be useful again by going through some treatment.
Methods of recycling waste
- Burning of pit to be used as manure
- Use of incinerator
Advantages of Recycling
- It keeps our environment clean.
- It promote personal hygiene.
- It is used to generate income.
- It can be used as fertilizers after treatment.
- It is cheap.
- It provides jobs.
Dangers of poor Disposal of waste.
- It cause germs
- Emission of gaseous waste into the air can lead to serious illness.
- It lead to pollution of the environment.
- It could lead to erosion
- It could destroy plant and animals
- It could lead to serious respiratory problem.
INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURE.
- The Teacher revises the previous lesson (Healthy Environment).
- The Teacher introduces the lesson through question and answer (Waste disposal).
- The Teacher explains the lessons.
- The Teacher write the note on the board.
LEARNERS ACTIVITIES
